Building a Safe Haven
in the Volcano Jungle

Thankfully we’ve had some blue skies, giving us the chance for major behind the scenes progress on our permanent sanctuary site! The concrete floors are poured! Cheee hooo we’re so excited that’s done. And now, our builders have been framing out the walls, and getting ready for windows and roofing! Speaking of roofing, our builder needs help to complete the roofing over the main shelter at our site. This is a paid position ($25 per hour) that will last for a period of several days, but will be dependent on weather. Minimum qualifications are: 1. Experience with working safely be on a construction site, particularly doing roofing. 2. Isn’t a pain to work with (no drama), a pleasure to be around all day/multiple days and takes direction well. 3. Reliable transportation is a must (build site is on the east side of the island) 4. Tools are a plus! If you or someone you know might be the right person for the job, please send us an email or DM via social media, or forward it on, and we’ll connect you with our builder! Till next time, every bolt is getting us closer to move-in day for the kitties of Volcano Cat Sanctuary here on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Can you help us hold the vision of a completed sanctuary, with happy cats running around and living their lives free from threat? Squeeze your eyes real tight, and picture it! We’re almost there…

Our Mission

We are currently fostering kittens ages 4 weeks to 12 weeks, as well as some adult cats on a case to case basis. We are actively building a cat sanctuary in Volcano, HI. We have cleared one acre of land and installed cat proof fencing, and continue to work towards building structures, and obtaining water, sewer and electricity. Our efforts are focused on building a beautiful cat sanctuary where stray and homeless cats can live their lives in peace and safety.

We also are continuing to work to decrease the feral and free roaming cat population on Hawaii Island to help protect native bird species and Hawaii's delicate ecosystem.

I visited Volcano Cat Sanctuary in October, and was impressed with the dedication and care the animals were receiving. The kittens are socialized, neutered or spayed, and receive medical treatment before they are allowed to be adopted. All of the people I met while visiting were compassionate about the sweet kittens in their care, and seemed to really love what they were doing.

This organization is doing so much to help in our community! They have helped me get two litters of foster kittens adopted! They have helped me out so much with medications, spaying and neutering, and are super supportive to their kitty foster parents!

VCS does everything they can to help community cats in the midst of the overpopulation crisis here. When a caring kupuna approached me after finding a mama and her fresh batch of kittens on the property he rents where cats aren’t allowed, I ended up turning to VCS. I quickly became a foster for them while they provided the kittens the care they needed (treatment for parasites, spay/neuter, adoption outreach, etc) at as little inconvenience to me as possible. I’ve now adopted some of those kitties and fostered many more through Volcano Cat Sanctuary. It’s been great to connect with such kind-hearted people who go above and beyond for the environment and community.
